Blog Post #4: Reflecting On The Environmental Geography
Of My Meal
I feel that the Orange Juice in my meal is a solution. The oranges that Simply Orange use, need minimal nutrients and fertilizers to grow to even make the juice. Minimal chemicals are used and less water is needed to fully grow these trees that host the oranges. The juice is bottled in plastic meaning, it emits methane and ethylene through its production (global warming) and contaminates land and water bodies through its ubiquity (effects ecosystems/habitats).
At a local scale, I think that if we all grow our
oranges locally and made fresh orange juice, we wouldn't have those from other
countries who seek work as much as us American farmers who struggle with having
a steady income, risking health problems, and working long shifts.
